Location
This
is an ideal spot for a vacation retreat or retirement home. Property taxes
and the cost of living is very reasonable, the second least
expensive
county for property taxes in the
state. Yet, you will be only a 15 minutes drive to
historic Bryson City, the county seat of scenic
Swain County, North Carolina, in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. Just a
little over an hour from Ashville or a leisurely three hour drive from
downtown Atlanta.
Swain
County is only about 60,000 acres of private land. There is very little
land left for
private development as 87% of the land, or about five hundred square miles
is owned by the Federal Government, mostly the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park.
Swain County consists mostly of
mountains. Forests for hunting in season and the fifty mile Fontana Lake , which is all
in
the national forest and great for all kinds of water sports. The Nantahala,
Tuckaseegee and Little Tennessee Rivers are all ideal for fishing or exploring by
boat, raft or kayak.
Beautiful Bryson City, nestled in the mountains,
offers convenient shopping, a modern hospital, four banks and fine
restaurants where one can enjoy a cocktail with dinner, a rare treat in
the mountains!!
Because there is so very little privately owned land available,
traffic problems as found in other parts of the mountains are
non-existent.
